The bodies of 22 Covid victims were herded together in an ambulance as they were transported to the crematorium in the Beed district of Maharashtra. The incident sparked public outrage, which forced the Beed County Council to rush to investigate the matter.

Police allegedly ripped off the phones of relatives of two victims who were clicking photos of bodies crammed in a van, an eyewitness to the incident told The Times of India. Their phones were only returned after the final rites were performed.

Officials said the 22 bodies in body bags were selected by Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada Government Medical College in Ambajogai.

Ravindra Jagtap, Beed District Collector, told ToI, “I have ordered the Ambajogai additional collector to investigate the matter. We will take action against anyone found guilty. “

“There are only two ambulances to bring bodies to the crematorium. We asked for more ambulances. Our job is to hand over the corpses to the Ambajogai citizen body to perform the final rites. What the citizen body does is not in our control, ”said SRTMGMC Dean Dr. Shivaji Sukre.
