With reports of remdesivir drug shortages from across the country and black market prices, a total of 800 vials of remdesivir were stolen from a store at Gandhi Medical College, a government-run facility in Madhya Pradesh, in Bhopal on Saturday.

Bhopal has seen an unprecedented increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in the past three weeks. In addition to hospital beds and oxygen, the city also has an acute shortage of remdesivir injections, which are needed to treat Covid-19.

The state government has taken over the distribution of the remdesivir injections and is now allocating them to different hospitals depending on bed capacity for the treatment of Covid-19 patients.

After remdesivir injections hit medical store shelves last week, they are being sold on the black market for up to Rs 20,000 per injection. A Covid patient with infected lungs requires a full dose of six injections over five days.

After news of the theft of remdesivir injections, Minister of Medical Education Vishwas Sarang reached Hamidia Hospital – the medical facility associated with Gandhi Medical College.

“Given the situation in Covid in the state, this is a very serious problem and we are putting a system in place to ensure that such an incident does not happen again,” said Sarang.

DIG Irshad Wali also reached the hospital and said the perpetrators will be caught soon.
