Three people, including a Panchayat member of the Bharatiya Janata party, were arrested by police in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday in an extortion case. The arrest took place in Sopore in the northern Kashmiri district of Baramulla.

According to a police statement, the complaint was made by a man named Mudasir Ahmad Sheikh. He claimed that some unknown men with guns stormed into his in-laws’ house in Nadihal a few days ago. The men took their cell phones with them.

The police filed an initial information report and opened an investigation. An investigation found that a BJP-affiliated Panchayat member, Mehrajuddin Rather, was one of the perpetrators. He confessed to the crime and revealed the names of three others who were involved in the case.

The other three have been identified as Muhammad Saleem Wani, Bashir Ahmad Lone, and Muhammad Dilawar Khawaja.

“During the investigation, three people were asked to question, but Muhammad Saleem Wani from Anantnag is still at large,” said the police spokesman. Muhammad Saleem Wani is a sarpanch that represents the BJP.

According to the police, Mehrajuddin Rather and Muhammad Saleem Wani planned to extort money from “Lone Traders”, the applicant’s in-laws. With the help of the other two defendants, they were given “counterfeit weapons” to carry out the crime.

A police investigation is currently ongoing.
