A powerful bomb exploded in the parking lot of a luxury hotel in the southwest Pakistani city of Quetta on Wednesday, killing at least four people and injuring at least nine others, police said.

It was unclear who was behind the bombings at the Serena Hotel. Police said rescuers were transporting victims to nearby hospitals. Recordings on Pakistani news channels showed cars on fire.

“Enemies of Pakistan”

Southwest Balochistan Province is the scene of a long-running uprising by secessionist groups such as the Balochistan Liberation Front and the Balochistan Liberation Army. They have orchestrated attacks for decades to enforce their demands for independence. The Pakistani Taliban are also present there.

Liaquat Shahwani, a spokesman for the provincial government. called the bombing an act of terrorism without going into detail. “Pakistan’s enemies are behind today’s attack,” he said.

Security guards rushed to the hotel and no one was allowed to approach the location of the explosion. Senior Police Officer Azhar Akram said some of the wounded were in critical condition. He did not provide any further details and said the police are still investigating.

Wasim Beg, a spokesman for the provincial health department, said four people died in the bombings and twelve were injured.

Arbab Kamran Kasi, a doctor at Quetta Main Hospital, said about a dozen wounded were taken there and they declared an emergency at the hospital to treat the victims.

No one immediately took responsibility for the attack in Quetta, the capital of the southwestern province of Balochistan.
