The UK variant of Covid-19 has been detected in 70 percent samples sent to the NCDC by the Chandigarh Postgraduate Institute for Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).

The British variant of Covid-19 was found in 70 percent of 60 samples sent to the National Center for Disease Control, PGIMER said Thursday.
“Seventy percent of the samples had a UK variant of Covid-19 and 20 percent of the samples had a 681H mutant,” Jagat Ram, director of the Postgraduate Institute for Medical Education and Research, said in a statement here.
Most of the samples were from Chandigarh, he added.
He said PGIMER’s virology division sent 60 positive samples of Covid-19 to the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) in New Delhi in March.
It was found that 70 percent of the samples had UK variants of Covid-19, one sample had a double mutation. A 681H mutant of Covid-19 was observed in 20 percent of the samples.
Jagat Ram said that given the high levels of transmission and the faster spread of Covid-19 by the British variant, everyone should follow Covid-appropriate behavior.
The director also advised avoiding crowded places and non-essential travel.
He also stressed the need to vaccinate priority groups.
