Covid-19: At current pace, Maharashtra to take over 100 days to vaccinate all above 45 years of age

At the current rate of vaccination, it will take Maharashtra over 100 days to immunize anyone over 45 years. Even though the state government has asked the center to allow vaccinations for all adults, the number of people vaccinated in the previously permitted age group suggests that this will be a difficult challenge for the authorities.

According to the Union Ministry of Health, India has given 9.5 crore people the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and by April 13 the second dose 1.34 crore, vaccinating 10.85 crore people to date.

But Maharashtra – the hardest hit state – has only vaccinated 77.3 lakh over 45 so far. Not only does the state have the highest cases and deaths in the country, but it also has one of the highest test positivity rates in the world.

OVER 100 DAYS TO VACCINATE PEOPLE 45+

According to the state health authorities, an average of 2.75 to 3 lakh are vaccinated daily in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra has 3.86 million people over 45 years of age. Of these, the state vaccinated 33.8 lakh in the 45- to 60-year-old age group and 43.5 lakh over the age of 60, for a total of 77.3 lakh. That is only 19.9 percent of the over 45-year-olds.

At the current rate, it will take Maharashtra between 102 and 112 days to vaccinate the remaining 80 percent (3.08 crore) of people in this age group.

FOUR ADDITIONAL MONTHS REQUIRED TO VACCINATE ALL ADULTS

The Maharashtra government has come into conflict with the center over requesting vaccination for all adults. State officials have said the capacity to deliver shocks can be increased up to 6-7 lakh per day. However, it can prove to be a difficult task.

If allowed, Maharashtra will aim to vaccinate more than 3.43 crore people in the 25 to 45 age group, along with the upcoming 80 percent or more than 3 crore people over 45 years of age.

If vaccination continues at the current rate, it will take Maharashtra an additional 4 months to vaccinate people between 25 and 45.
