Covid-19: Supply medical oxygen to Max hospitals at any cost, Delhi HC directs Centre amid shortage

The Supreme Court of Delhi has ordered the central government to provide six hospitals in the state capital with all necessary medical oxygen at the earliest. An HC bank gave the order when it heard a plea from Max Healthcare about the lack of medical oxygen in its Delhi-NCR hospitals.

These are – Max Hospital (Saket), Max Smart Hospital (Saket), Max Hospital (Patparganj), Max Hospital (Shalimar Bagh), Max Hospital (Vaishali) and Max Hospital (Gurugram).

The Supreme Court was told that 2,000 tons of medical oxygen would reach Max Hospital in Delhi’s Patparganj in two hours.

On the previous Wednesday, Max Healthcare issued a press release in which there were only a few hours of medical oxygen supply. Over 1,400 Covid-19 patients will be treated at seven o’clock Max Healthcare Hospitalsadded the statement.

Max Healthcare then moved the Supreme Court to request an urgent hearing on the matter. A Delhi HC bank, made up of Judges Vipin Sanghi and Rekha Palli, said the center was instructed to protect the fundamental right to life of citizens who are seriously ill from Covid-19 and in need of medical oxygen.

“If necessary, redirect all industrial supplies”

The bank expressed surprise at the central government’s inaction despite the April 20 Supreme Court ruling on the matter.

“Yesterday we passed a detailed order, including one on the subject of lack of oxygen. We have been informed that all industrial oxygen will be diverted for medical use, with the exception of certain critical industries, including steel and petroleum. Certain others were running. However, the nature of these industries has not been discussed. Inox’s attorney and Mr. Jain claim they produce oxygen to their full capacity, ”the bank said on Wednesday.

In addition, the Delhi Supreme Court said the center should divert all industrial oxygen supplies, particularly steel and petroleum, to medical use if necessary.

“Industry can wait a few weeks, but the government didn’t even think in that direction. This shows that human lives are not that important to the government. We are shocked and dismayed that the government is unaware of the extremely urgent need for oxygen. The sky will not fall if oxygen is withdrawn from industry for a few weeks, ”noted the Delhi HC.

“Green corridors for the transport of medical oxygen”

Transporting medical oxygen from the production site to the various hospitals is time-consuming and possible via green corridors, according to the bank.

“The center should consider ways and means of transportation from the oxygen plant, either by creating a dedicated corridor so that the supply chain is not compromised,” the Delhi Supreme Court order said.

Oxygen supplies shouldn’t be hindered for any reason, the bank said.
