Covid-19 vaccines for all adults in India from May 1, says Centre

The Covid-19 vaccination campaign will be open to everyone over the age of 18 from May 1st. The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.

The center launched a nationwide vaccination campaign for healthcare workers and frontline workers on January 16, and expanded it to include those over 45 on April 1

During Monday’s meeting, PM Modi said the government had worked hard for over a year to make sure most Indians received vaccines in the shortest possible time. He added that India is vaccinating people at a record pace and this is continuing with even greater momentum.

As part of the “liberalized and accelerated phase 3 strategy of Covid 19 vaccination”, anyone over the age of 18 can receive Covid 19 vaccinations.

GOVERNMENT TO ALLOW VACCINE SALE IN THE OPEN MARKET

In this phase, the state governments are allowed to purchase vaccines directly from the manufacturers. The vaccine manufacturers are also allowed to sell the vials on the open market.

“As part of Phase 3 of the Covid Vaccination Strategy, vaccine makers would deliver 50 percent of their monthly approved doses to the Central Drugs Laboratory to the Government of India and deliver the remaining 50 percent of the doses to state governments and the open market.” “said an official statement from the center.

“The Government of India will allocate vaccines to States / UTs based on their stake based on severity of infection (number of active Covid cases) and performance (speed of administration) criteria. Vaccine waste is also accounted for in these criteria and will adversely affect the criteria, “the statement said.

The division of vaccine supply, 50 percent to the center and 50 percent to government or private buyers, is only mandatory for vaccines made in India. All imported vaccines will be allowed to be sold in the open market without restrictions, the center said.

FREE VACCINE FOR CURRENT ALLOWED GROUPS

According to Government Ordinance, vaccination will continue as before at Indian Government Vaccination Centers which are provided free of charge to the eligible population as previously defined, i.e. health care workers, frontline workers and anyone over the age of 45.
