Covid deaths in India could peak by mid-May at over 5,000 per day: US study

According to an American study, India’s daily number of coronavirus-related deaths could peak at 5,600 by mid-May. This would mean that between April and August alone, nearly three lakh in the country could lose their lives to Covid-19.

The study, titled “COVID-19 Projections,” was conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Assessment (IHME) at the University of Washington. The study, published April 15 this year, was pinned Hope for India’s Nationwide Vaccinationon the ride to flood across the second wave of the pandemic.

The coronavirus pandemic in India will worsen in the coming weeks, the study by IHME experts warned. For the purposes of this study, experts assessed the current infection and death rates in India.

The study predicted India’s daily number of Covid-related deaths will peak at 5,600 on May 10 this year. With an additional 3.29,000 deaths between April 12 and August 1, the cumulative death toll could rise to 6.65,000 by the end of July.

Universal mask cover

Another projection in the study says universal mask cover (95 percent) could cut that number by 70,000 by the end of the third week of April.

The University of Washington study found that the number of daily Covid-19 cases and deaths in India declined from September 2020 to mid-February 2021.

However, the country then saw a reversal of that trend with a dramatic increase in new confirmed cases of coronavirus in April.

Daily Covid-19 cases have doubled compared to the previous high in September last year.

Between the first and second week of April, the daily number of new confirmed cases increased by 71 percent and the daily number of deaths increased by 55 percent due to non-compliance with Covid-appropriate behavior through attending massive gatherings and refusing to wear face masks.

Covid-19 fifth leading cause of death in India

The IHME analysis has shown that Covid-19 is the fifth largest cause of death in India as of mid-April.

The results of this study came after the number of new cases reported every 24 hours rose to an average of 1,33,400 in the first week of April, compared to just 78,000 in the last week of March.

The estimated daily number of Covid-induced deaths During this period, the death rate (CFR) in Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Punjab rose from an average of 970 to 1,500.

In the study, researchers estimate that 24 percent of people in India were exposed to Covid-19 on April 12 this year.

However, IHME experts have shown great confidence in coronavirus vaccines approved for emergency use in India. They assume that the nationwide introduction of vaccines alone will save around 85,600 lives by the end of July.
