Pictures were taken of Covid patients sleeping on the sidewalk in front of the Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BRIMS) in Karnataka’s city of Bidar. Due to the lack of hospital beds, patients have no choice but to wait outside and sleep there until they can get a bed.

In response to this scarcity, Karnataka Health Minister Dr. K Sudhakar that Bidar has seen a huge surge in Covid-19 cases.

The district registered 202 new cases on Wednesday, bringing the cumulative number of cases to 14,322. The district also reported five Covid deaths on Wednesday.

Sudhakar added: “The only big institution there is BRIMS. The burden obviously lies more with this institute. We’re trying to expand that [medical] Infrastructure in terms of increasing beds, units with high dependency and intensive care units. We will take some time to do this. “

“No shortage of beds”

On the other hand, Bidar’s deputy commissioner Ramachandran R said there was no shortage of beds in the district. He also stated that BRIMS is a special COVID-19 hospital and not a COVID-19 care center. Therefore, only COVID-19 patients who need to be hospitalized will be admitted, he said.

Speaking to the local media, he said: “Some people who claim to be members of an NGO have started a rumor that there is no bed available in the district for new patients. The fact is, however, that there is no shortage of beds. We have 450 beds in the old hospital and another 100 beds in the new hospital. “

The Deputy Commissioner also stated that legal action would be taken against those who spread misinformation and mislead people. He appealed to the people to “ignore rumors and false news”.
