Delhi hospital with 200 Covid patients runs out of oxygen; smaller hospitals complain of no supply


A hospital in Delhi’s Janakpuri with over 200 Covid-19 patients no longer has an oxygen supply and has called for help.

The hospitals in Delhi have faced an acute shortage of oxygen with the increasing number of Covid-19 cases. (PTI)

While the center increased the oxygen quota in Delhi, several hospitals in the city are still demanding immediate oxygen supplies, including the Mata Chanan Devi Hospital, where over 200 Covid-19 patients are in dire need of oxygen and the hospital is out of supplies.

On Thursday morning, Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in Janakpuri reported a severe oxygen crisis and said they had depleted their supplies that morning. Over 200 patients who need oxygen are admitted to the hospital.

The hospital has been in constant contact with suppliers and authorities since Wednesday evening, but was unable to obtain oxygen until Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, the center increased the oxygen quota in Delhi from 378 tons to 480 tons, which are supplied by other states. However, the Delhi government said so Oxygen supply from other states will take days to reach the city.

Smaller hospitals complain of neglect

Meanwhile, many other small 50-bed hospitals in Delhi are still struggling to find adequate oxygen supplies for Covid-19 patients.

The Pushpanjali Medical Center in Anand Vihar was almost out of oxygen by Wednesday evening and made efforts to maintain supplies by borrowing cylinders from nearby centers and agencies.

He said he had 37 Covid-19 patients in the hospital while many non-Covid patients are also being admitted and having difficulty maintaining oxygen supplies.

The government oxygen tank refill center was set up in Bawana, which is very far from the hospital in East Delhi.
