The past two weeks have been detrimental to India in terms of the increase in Covid-19 cases across the country. Delhi reported the highest daily increase on Wednesday with 17,282 new cases and 104 deaths. Taking into account the rising Covid-19 cases, the Union Department of Education canceled the CBSE board exams for grade 10 and postponed the board exams for grade 12 on Wednesday

1) ‘Shahi Snan’ in Haridwar: Lakhs ignore Covid’s concerns about taking holy baths
Lakhs of people who exercised caution gathered in the ghats of Haridwar to take a holy bath in the Ganga during the third Shahi Snan of the Kumbh Mela. Over 13.5 lakh, including sadhus from 13 akhadas, bathed in the ganga at the end of the day.
2) The government is committed to ensuring adequate vaccine availability: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Wednesday that the government has a duty to ensure adequate availability of Covid-19 vaccines and called for the combined power of community groups, political parties and NGOs to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.
PM Modi interacted with governors and lieutenant governors of all states and territories in the Union via videoconference calling on them to take an active part in ensuring that social institutions work seamlessly with state governments.
3) Delhi government wants to convert hotels into sprawling hospitals in Covid
The Delhi government on Wednesday ordered the number of beds reserved for Covid-19 patients in their hospitals to be increased and banquet halls and hotels connected to these facilities, in a massive surge in cases.
4) Delhi has the highest daily increase with 17,282 cases
Delhi recorded the highest daily increase with 17,282 new cases. The city also reported 104 deaths. Delhi is now the worst hit city in the country.
The highest one-day peak in Mumbai to date is 9,986 cases, followed by Bengaluru (6,387 cases), Chennai (2,105) and Kolkata (1,271 cases).
5) Crematoria in Delhi, cemeteries struggle to manage resources as Covid-19 kills 409 people in just 13 days
With a sharp surge in deaths due to the recent surge in Covid-19 cases, Delhi crematoriums and burial grounds are struggling to manage resources. According to the official number of confirmed and suspected cases, the virus killed 409 people in Delhi in the first 13 days of April, while claiming 117 people for the entire month of March and 57 lives in February. This significant increase in the death rate has resulted in an onslaught of bodies in the city’s crematoria and burial grounds.
6) CBSE 10th board exams canceled, 12th postponed under Covid Surge
Prime Minister Modi chaired a high-level meeting on Wednesday to discuss the Exams at different levels in view of the evolving coronavirus situation. After meeting with the Prime Minister, the Department of Education decided to postpone the grade 12 board exams and cancel the grade 10 board exams amid the surge in Covid-19.
Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Prime Minister’s Chief Secretary, Cabinet Secretary, School and College Secretaries and other senior officials attended the meeting.
7) Denmark stops using AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine due to fear of blood clots
Denmark became the first country on Wednesday to stop using AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine because of a possible link to a rare but serious form of blood clot. The decision will postpone the planned completion of the Danish vaccination program until the beginning of August from July 25, the health authorities said.
However, this new schedule assumes the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, whose introduction in Europe has been delayed due to similar coagulation problems and whose use has been suspended in Denmark.
8) Rajasthan extends curfew by 2 hours; The new timing is from 6pm to 6am
By changing the rule from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., the curfew will now be imposed from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in Rajasthan. The state reported 6,200 new positive cases and 29 deaths on Wednesday. Amid increasing cases, the Rajasthan government has decided to extend the curfew by two hours. On Wednesday, Rajasthan reported 29 deaths and 6,200 positive cases.
9) The 15 day lockdown begins in Maharashtra
As per Maharashtra Government Guidelines, Section 144 is imposed for 15 days and no one is allowed to move in public without a valid reason. All facilities, public spaces, activities and services would remain closed. The only exceptions are services and activities that are listed under “essential category”.
10) According to HC orders, EC will hold an all-party meeting on the Covid Protocol in Calcutta
Aariz Aftab, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, called an all-party meeting on Friday, An EC official followed instructions from the Calcutta Supreme Court to the CEO and all district judges in the state to ensure the strict implementation of the Covid-19 protocol during the campaign for the remaining four phases of the state elections.
