Health ministry Update on Covid outbreak in India

The Union Department of Health announced Monday that state governments have been asked to create a dashboard to provide real-time information on the facilities available from Covid such as hospital beds and ambulances or other transportation vehicles in the state. These dashboards can be created and maintained at both the country and district levels, according to officials at the Department of Health.

At a news conference in New Delhi, officials said state governments have also been asked to focus on developing additional health facilities in districts where high volumes of Covid-19 cases are reported.

Health Department officials said there are eight states in India with more than one lakh active cases. These states include Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu.

The department has directed states to ensure effective surveillance of home isolation cases and to provide seamless hospitalizations for eligible cases.

Government protocol, as well as health experts, advise that patients with mild to moderate symptoms should remain in isolation at home. Hospitalization is prescribed only to patients with moderate to severe and severe symptoms.

At the press conference, AIIMS director Dr. Randeep Guleria that states must ensure the rational use of oxygen and drugs such as remdesivir, tocilizumab, etc.

“We need to reduce the number of cases and make the best use of hospital resources. The careful use of oxygen is very important. Right now there is an unnecessary panic,” said Dr. Randeep Guleria.

He also said doctors should be encouraged to look beyond remdesivir and tocilizumab and prescribe equally effective drugs that are part of clinical management protocol and are widely used.

Recognizing that states are re-energizing Covid management, the Ministry of Health stressed the need to stop the chain of virus transmission through proper tracking and clinical management.

Regarding the oxygen shortage, the Union’s Interior Ministry’s additional secretary assured that the government was doing everything possible to contain the shortage.

“India orders oxygen tankers from abroad on a purchase or rental basis. Transporting oxygen tankers is a major challenge. We use real-time tracking to monitor the movement of oxygen tankers,” he said.

Health Department officials said there are at least 12 states that have given over 80 percent of frontline workers the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. The ministry also praised the efforts of Rajasthan, Chattishgarh, and Ladakh for their efforts to quickly immunize people over the age of 60.

Officials also tried to dispel rumors that women cannot take the Covid-19 vaccine during menstruation.
