India on UK’s Covid-19 travel red list | What does it mean


The Britain has put India on the red list of Covid-19 trips. On Monday. This means that non-UK or Irish residents or UK citizens will not be able to enter the UK if they have been in India in the last 10 days. UK residents entering the country from India will be required to be quarantined in a hotel for 11 nights. The rule goes into effect on April 23rd.

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the decision was made “as a precaution” regarding a new variant of coronavirus and the rapid rise in cases in India. The announcement came hours after Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s scheduled appointment Trip to India next week has been postponed.

Can i travel to the UK?

If you are a resident of the UK, Ireland, or a UK citizen, you can still travel to the UK after April 23rd. However, you must quarantine a hotel for 11 nights at your own expense.

If you are not a UK citizen, you will not be able to enter the UK if you have been to India in the last ten days. Non-UK citizens are currently only a small fraction of the people arriving in the country.

What does the hotel quarantine cost?

For a solo traveler, the cost of hotel quarantine required is £ 1,750, which equates to Rs 1.83 lakh. Some cost reductions apply for two or more people. This amount covers the cost of two mandatory RT-PCR tests on the second and eighth day of quarantine.

While the government has stated that hotel quarantine is 10 days, it is actually 11 nights and spans 12 days. This includes the day of arrival, ten full days in the hotel and the day of release.

What flights are currently available from India to the UK?

There are currently a handful of flights daily from Indian cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad to the UK, mostly to London Heathrow Airport. The airlines operating these flights are British Airways, Vistara and Air India.

After India is added to the “Red List”, the number of direct flights between India and Great Britain is likely to decrease.

Why was India put on the “Red List”?

India Double mutant variant named B.1.617 should be at least partially responsible for a significant increase in Covid cases in the country. There is evidence that this strain may even be able to evade antibodies.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said 103 cases of this variant had been identified in the UK and a large number of these were related to international travel.

In order to “protect the progress that we have made in this country in combating this terrible disease”, the British government has put India on its “Red List”.

India reported 2,73,810 new infections on Monday in its highest daily increase since the pandemic began.

Has the UK announced anything?

The UK announced that India was added to its “Red List” on Monday, but the rule will not take effect until April 23rd. Therefore, a notice period of four days has been provided for those who need to travel back to the UK but wish to avoid hotel quarantine.

Hong Kong has suspended flights from India, Pakistan and the Philippines from April 20 for two weeks because of the new virus strain. These countries have been classified as “extremely high risk” by the Hong Kong government.
