IPL 2021: Moeen Ali, Deepak Chahar help CSK hammer PBKS and gift MS Dhoni victory in 200th match

Chennai Super Kings made their return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 in style on Friday when they recorded a comfortable 6-wicket win over Punjab Kings in their eighth game at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

CSK, who lost their opening game to Delhi Capitals, pursued a meager goal of 107 in xx.x overs to claim their first win of their 14th season. A 31-Ball 46 from Moeen Ali and a career best 4/13 from Deepak Chahar ensured that MS Dhoni celebrated its 200th T20 match for CSK with a dominant win.

IPL 2021, PBKS vs CSK: highlights

CSK drove solid shots from Ali and Faf du Plessis (36, not eliminated) to cross the finish line with 26 balls from Kings Bowler after a shaky start from the Super Kings.

Mohammed Shami picked up the gates of Suresh Raina (8) and Ambati Rayudu (0) in consecutive balls on the 15th, but his efforts came too late for the Punjab kings who were common on Friday night.

Moeen Ali and Faf du Plessis anchor the comfortable chase

CSK started slowly and lost Ruturaj Gaikwad’s wicket at the start of the chase when Arshdeep Singh sent him back for 5 (15 balls).

Moeen then joined du Plessis on the fold and immediately took over the innings after weathering the early storm. The English all-rounder and former South African skipper added 66 for the second wicket to get the team to safety and eventually reach the required destination.

The win was set up very early in the game by Deepak Chahar when he bagged 4 wickets for 13 runs from his opening spell after Dhoni won the throw and knocked Punjab out in Mumbai. Chahar started the damage with Mayank Agarwal’s wicket in the third run before Ravindra Jadeja KL Rahul ran out with a direct hit from point in the third run.

Chahar removed Chris Gayle and Nicholas Pooran on the fifth round of the power play to break the backbone of the PBKS batting team.

But he wasn’t done when Dhoni decided to play him out all at once and Chahar responded by catching the shaped Deepak Hooda in the middle for 10 minutes.

Shah Rukh Khan’s 47 in vain

Highly rated Tamil Nadu batsman Shah Rukh Khan showed glimpses of his potential as he countered the CSK bowling attack. Shah Rukh hit 47 of 36 balls and collected 2 6s and 4 limits but found no support from the rest of the Punjab Kings batsmen.

While Chahar picked up 4 wickets, Sam Curran, Dwayne Bravo and Moeen Ali picked up one each to keep Punjab below average.
