Lockdown-like Covid curbs in Bengal; malls, restaurants, gyms shut till further orders


The West Bengal government issued an order on Friday to close all shopping complexes / malls, beauty salons, movie theaters, restaurants, bars, sports facilities, gyms, spas and swimming pools until further notice.

Medical stores, medical device outlets, grocery stores, and home delivery services have been kept out of order.

All social and cultural gatherings have been banned in the state given the situation in Covid-19.

Only markets are allowed to operate between 7:00 am and 10:00 am and 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the state.

As per Government Ordinance, all activities related to election counting processes and victory rallies / processions will be conducted in accordance with the last order of the Indian electoral commission (ECI).

In their detailed order, the electoral commission announced on Tuesday that no more than two people would be allowed to accompany the victorious candidate to receive their certificate of victory for the May 2 election result. The electoral commission’s ban on electoral processions stems from the fact that the country has experienced a severe second wave of Covid-19 More than 2,000 people are killed every day for a few days.

Additionally, unnecessary communities in the vicinity of counting halls are discouraged and restricted and must adhere to physical distancing standards and other appropriate behaviors from Covid-19. The state government said the crush near the counting location should be averted.

Any person who violates these measures may be charged under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act of 2005, save for action under Section 188 of the Indian Criminal Code and other applicable statutory provisions.

West Bengal recorded the highest one-day death of 89 people from Covid-19 on Thursday, bringing the death toll to 11,248, PTI reported. The coronavirus mark passed the 8 lakh mark and stood at 8.10.955 after testing positive for 17,403 in the past 24 hours.
