At least three patients died after a fire broke out in a private hospital near Thane, Maharashtra, Wednesday morning, an official said.
It broke out at 3:40 a.m. at the Prime Criticare Hospital in Kausa in Mumbra near Thane. The hospital has no coronavirus patients in the hospital, he added.
Three fire trucks and five ambulances were pulled in and the fire was put out, the officer said.
Twenty patients, including six in intensive care, have been evacuated, he said.
Local MLA and Maharashtra minister Jitendra Awhad told local reporters that at least three people were roasted alive in the fire that destroyed the hospital’s first floor.
Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray had been informed of the tragedy, he said.
The family of each deceased will receive compensation of Rs. Five lakh and the injured will each receive one lakh, he added.
A high-level investigative committee has been set up to investigate the cause of the fire, he said. The committee will consist of officers from Thane Municipal Corporation, as well as police and medical officers, he said.
