Maharashtra reports 66,836 new coronavirus cases, 773 deaths

Maharashtra reported an increase of 66,836 new coronavirus cases and 773 Covid deaths on Friday, according to the state government.

The state reported the highest one-day increase in the death toll on Friday after 773 people succumbed to the deadly virus that continues to gripe the country.

This brings the number of active Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra to 6,91,851 – the highest in India.

The state’s Covid-19 balance sheet has now climbed to 41,61,676 and the positivity rate rose to 16.53 percent.

With the growing cases Maharashtra remains on the sidelines as a state has reported a lack of medical care, including life-saving oxygen and Covid-19 vaccine doses.

During a virtual meeting, Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to increase the supply of medical oxygen to meet state requirements.

In India, there was a one-day increase of 3.32,730 (3.32 lakh) coronavirus infections and 2,263 deaths with 24.28,616 (24.28 lakh) active cases on Friday.

The ongoing second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in India could peak between May 11 and May 15 with a total of 33 to 35 lakh “active” cases and decline sharply by the end of May, according to a math module developed by IIT scientists.
