Massive earthquake in Assam leaves buildings damaged, walls cracked. See photos


Assam and Bengal shivered badly on Wednesday after a massive 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the northeastern states and caused widespread damage.

The quake hit the Sonitpur district at 7:51 a.m. and tremors were felt throughout the region, including Meghalaya and northern parts of West Bengal, officials said. Two more jerks followed with a magnitude of 4.3 and 4.4 at 7.58 and 8.01.

The high intensity earthquake early Wednesday caused damage to homes and buildings with cracks on streets in multiple locations in Assam. No injuries or casualties have been reported to date.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged all possible assistance from the center to Assam after the state was struck by an earthquake.

“I spoke to Assam CM Shri @sarbanandsonwal Ji about the earthquake in parts of the state. I have pledged all possible help from the center. I pray for the well-being of the people of Assam,” PM Modi tweeted.
