PM Modi chairs high-level meeting on oxygen supply, directs officials to increase production

In the face of acute oxygen shortages in several parts of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday directed officials to ensure smooth and unhindered oxygen supplies to states.

While chairing a high-level oxygen supply and availability meeting, PM Modi urged officials to take urgent action to increase production, accelerate distribution and use innovative methods of oxygen support to healthcare facilities.

Some parts of India are currently suffering from a lack of oxygen due to increased demand during the Covid-19 pandemic. Parts of Delhi, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have re-recorded complaints from hospitals struggling with critically low reserves of liquid oxygen.

The matter was also taken up by several high courts as well as Supreme Court, The center has released a notice in which it presents its national plan for Covid readiness by Friday.

PM Modi chaired the urgent matter meeting and urged officials to ensure that various states’ oxygenation is smooth and unhindered. He spoke about the need to settle responsibility with the local administration in the event of violations.

The Prime Minister also urged ministries to explore various innovative ways to increase the production and supply of oxygen.

PM Modi emphasized the need to ensure faster oxygen transport to the states. The Prime Minister was informed that the railways were used for the fast and uninterrupted long-distance transport of tankers. “The first rake from Mumbai to Vizag was enough to transport 105 tons of LMO. In a similar way, empty oxygen tankers are also being transported to oxygen suppliers in order to shorten the one-way travel time for the oxygen supply, ”said the Prime Minister during the meeting.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister also urged states to take strict action against hoarders.

The meeting was attended by the cabinet secretary, chief secretary of the prime minister, interior ministers, health secretary and officials from the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Road Transport, Pharma and Niti Aayog.

Officials informed the Prime Minister that an extensive exercise would be conducted in coordination with states to determine their oxygen needs and ensure adequate supplies.

“Against the current demand from 20 states for 6,785 tons of liquid medical oxygen per day, the Indian government allocated 6,822 tons per day to these states as of April 21,” the statement said.

Officials said the availability of liquid medical oxygen was increased by about 3,300 tons per day through contributions from private and public steel mills, industries, oxygen makers, as well as the oxygen supply ban for non-essential industries.

“Various measures are being taken to rapidly increase the availability of cryogenic tankers by converting nitrogen and argon tankers, importing and air transporting tankers and manufacturing them,” it said.
