Poll of polls: Tight fight in Bengal, DMK sweeps Tamil Nadu, Left in Kerala, BJP wins Assam

West Bengal faces a close battle between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as both stand head to head and most of the polls for the West Bengal Gathering election show take place.

A poll of five Exit polls predicts Mamata Banerjee’s TMC will win 148 of the 292 seats that took part in the polls. This is just above the 146 halftime mark required to form a government.

However, the BJP is close behind in the predictions and is expected to win 134 seats. If the prediction is correct on May 2nd and the election commission officially announces the results, it would be a massive win for the BJP. It only won three seats in the last election in Bengal.

The alliance between the Left Front Congress is likely a non-player winning 10 seats, according to the polls.

The five baseline surveys on which the survey was based are: India Today-Axis My India, ABP News-CVoter, Republic-CNX, News24-Today’s Chanakya, and India News-Jan Ki Baat.

In neighboring Assam, the BJP has more reason to cheer as the poll predicts the party will retain power.

Of the 126 seats in the state, the BJP is expected to win 73 seats and Congress is expected to win 52 seats. Others can win a seat, the predictions show.

All the exit elections unanimously indicate that these elections represent a major setback for Congress, which, while falling short in Assam and Kerala, may also lose its government in the territory of the Union of Pondicherry to the opposition alliance of AINRC-BJP-AIADMK.

In Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) does not seem to have damaged the image of the ruling LEF and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, despite investing large amounts of political capital.

The Left Front is expected to win 87 seats in the 140-member Kerala congregation, according to predictions of the poll of five Brexit polls. The Congress-led UDF is expected to win 51 seats and the BJP two seats.

If those numbers continue on counting day, history would make history for the LDF as it is the first time in over four decades that a ruling party has retained power in Kerala.

In neighboring Tamil Nadu, four out of five polls predicted a landslide victory for the DMK, led by MK Stalin.

Of the total of 234 seats, DMK is expected to win 162, while the alliance led by AIADM is expected to win 69 seats.

This time around, there were many smaller and new political parties contesting the parliamentary elections in Tamil Nadu, but the poll predicts none of them should matter to the final seat size. All of these parties together are expected to win 3 seats.

Apart from the four states, parliamentary elections were held in the territory of the Union of Puducherry. All surveys on the exit have shown that the BJP will form the next government here with its alliance partners.

The poll predicts that the AINRC + BJP + AIADMK alliance will win 21 seats in the 30-person house, while the congress-DMK alliance is expected to win nine seats.

In this case, BJP will be part of a government in the tiny Union territory of Puducherry for the first time. More importantly, there will be another region in South India where the BJP would have made its way.
