Stray violence reported, 57.30% voting till 1 pm in Phase 6 of Bengal Polls: Top developments


Stray cases of violence were reported on Thursday from different parts of Bengal, where voting is taking place in the sixth phase of the general election. The general electoral situation, however, was largely peaceful. A voter turnout of 57.30 percent was recorded by 1 p.m., an EU official said.

The elections, which began at 7 a.m., will take place in 43 assembly seats – 17 in North 24 Parganas District, nine each in Nadia and Uttar Dinajpur and eight in Purba Bardhaman.

There were long queues outside most polling stations with security guards asking everyone to follow Covid-19 security protocols as infections increased everywhere, the official said.

CLASH ERUPTS BETWEEN TMC, BJP WORKERS

Shots were reportedly fired in the Chopra area of ​​Uttar Dinajpur after clashes between TMC and BJP activists over allegations of hecklers by agents in a voting booth. Both parties denied using a gun and blamed the opposition for the violence.

The CEO’s office has asked the local administration for a report on the incident.

TMC ACTIVIST STABBED

In Raiganj, sources in the TMC said one of the ruling party’s activists suffered serious injuries after allegedly being stabbed by BJP workers. However, the Saffron Party denied the allegations.

Sporadic violence was also reported from the Bijpur constituency in North 24 Parganas, where TMC and BJP supporters clashed outside polling stations.

Both parties accused each other of trying to manipulate votes. Two TMC supporters and three BJP supporters were reportedly injured in the clashes.

A huge contingent of security forces was brought into the crisis areas to control the situation.

Bomb thrown at home by BJP LEADER

In the Halisahar area of ​​Naihati constituency, the Saffron Party alleged that bombs had been dropped on the residence of a local BJP leader. His mother and younger brother are known to have sustained injuries. The TMC and the BJP exchanged charges against each other.

TMC CANDIDATE RAJ CHAKRABORTY GHERAOED

Film director Raj Chakraborty, who became a TMC candidate, was brought together in the constituency of Barrackpore by BJP supporters who accused him of influencing voters. Chakraborty denied the allegations.

Raw bombs made by police officers were recovered from the country in the constituency of Amdanga.

Over 1.03 million voters will decide the political fate of 306 candidates in this phase. Up to 1,071 central armed forces companies were deployed to ensure free and fair voting.

Voting takes place in 14,480 polling stations in the 43 assembly segments.
