The ambitious Phase 3 vaccination campaign in the country amid the frenzied second wave of Covid-19 in various states is expected to hit a roadblock on May 1, when vaccination is due to begin for all adults over the age of 18.
Several state governments have said that they will not be able to start the vaccination campaign for all adults from May 1st because vaccine doses are scarce. These states also include Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Goa, which are ruled by the BJP.
Two days before the vaccination campaign, the Union’s Ministry of Health said on Thursday that more than 1 crore vaccine doses are still available with the states and they’ll get 20 lakh more doses in the next few days.
The department said the center has so far provided nearly 16.16 Crore vaccine doses to states and UTs for free. Of this total consumption including waste is 15,10,77,933 cans.

There are now over 2.45 crore beneficiaries have registered on the CoWIN platform by Friday morning for the phase 3 vaccination campaign, which starts on Saturday. Registration for the newly eligible populations began on Wednesday.
The Serum Institute’s current production capacity is 6-7 crore cans per month, while Bharat Biotech made about 2 crore cans in April versus 1.5 crore cans in March.

Maharashtra

Jharkhand
Vaccination opportunities for the 18+ age group in Jharkhand are unlikely to begin on May 1st. Jharkhand’s government has ordered 25 lakh Covid vaccines each from SII and Bharat Biotech. However, the vaccine doses have yet to be given to Jharkhand.
Gujarat
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has clearly stated that the Covid-19 vaccination campaign for the 18 to 45 age group in the state will begin no later than May 15, and not May 1 as directed by the center.
