Zomato CEO calls out Swiggy, apologises after Mumbai Police clarifies curfew rules. Viral

In a post on Twitter on Wednesday, Zomato CEO Deepomat Goyal scrutinized competitor Swiggy for delivering orders after 8 p.m. in Mumbai amid the coronavirus pandemic. Deepinder Goyal added a screenshot of Swiggy’s request for food delivery in his now viral post and tagged Mumbai Police with a request for clarification.

To curb the spread of the deadly virus, Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray announced a curfew on the state at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, with the exception of essential services.

“Zomato is ready to provide the essential grocery delivery service after 8pm in Mumbai, but we are not doing this because we comply with the law. I see that our competition continues after 8 p.m. I urge @MumbaiPolice to clear the way forward here, ”said Deepinder Goyal in his post.

Mumbai Police took note of Deepinder Goyal’s tweet and responded, asking him to “read the government notice”.

“Please read the government notice. They say home delivery is allowed but there is no set deadline, ”Mumbai police replied to Deepinder Goyal’s tweet.

Deepinder Goyal thanked the Mumbai Police for their response.

Shortly thereafter, Deepinder Goyal also announced an assignment from additional community commissioner Ashwini Bhide, who had posted a copy of the assignment from the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai clarifying the delivery of food. The order states: “All online deliveries of groceries and important goods (e-commerce) to your home via all online service providers such as Zomato, Swiggy, etc. are possible around the clock, every day of the week.”

The Zomato founder then apologized to Swiggy.

“Thank you. Mumbai, it’s our turn tomorrow. We received the notification at 9:54 pm. @Swiggy_in – I’m sorry, had no other choice. I love you,” he said.

An average of 60,000 Covid cases have been observed in Maharashtra every day for the past fourteen days. The beds in almost all government and private hospitals are full. Uddhav Thackeray reiterated that unless there is a medical emergency, people across the state will not be allowed to leave their homes until April 30.

Shops selling important goods are allowed to open between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Other shops, hotels, bars, restaurants, shopping malls, movie theaters, spas and gyms will remain completely closed.
