17-year-old dies in UP after alleged thrashing by police for violating ‘corona curfew’; constable suspended


A 17-year-old boy died in Uttar Pradesh’s Bengarmau after he was allegedly beaten by the police for violating the Corona curfew. After the incident, the authorities suspended a police officer.

A 17-year-old boy died Friday after allegedly beaten by police here for “violating” the state’s ongoing “corona curfew”, his family alleged, after which a police officer was suspended and a house guard was dismissed .

The incident occurred in Bhatpuri, Bangarmau area, when the boy was selling vegetables outside his home.

Police said in a statement that an FIR is being registered against the police officers involved and the whole matter is being investigated.

His family claimed the boy was caught by a police officer for allegedly violating the Corona curfew and hit with a stick.

He was later taken to a police station where he was beaten again, after which his condition deteriorated and he was taken to the Community Health Center, where he was pronounced dead, the family claimed.

Excited about the police action, the locals created a traffic jam at the intersection in Lucknow and demanded action against the guilty, a government job and compensation for the victim’s family.

Police later said in a statement: “Police officer Vijay Chodhury has been suspended on the matter with immediate effect and homeguard Satyaprakash has ceased. The whole matter is being investigated and an FIR will be recorded against the police officers.”

The government of Uttar Pradesh imposed a “corona curfew” until 7 a.m. on May 24th to curb the spread of coronavirus cases.
