In a meeting in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, three militants were killed while one surrendered to security forces.

Security forces launched a lockdown and search operation in the Kanigam area of South Kashmir district during the night after information about the presence of militants there, a Jammu Kashmiri police officer said.

The police officer said when the presence of four newly recruited local militants from the Al-Badr group was detected, the security forces were exercising maximum restraint and trying their best to persuade them to surrender.

The militants declined the offer to surrender, opened fire and threw a grenade at the security forces, the official said.

The security forces reciprocated and followed an encounter, the officer said.

However, during the encounter, one of the militants surrendered to security forces while three others were killed.

The surrendered militant was identified as Tausif Ahmad, the official said.
