President Jair Bolsonaro has to pay a fine for failing to comply with state health regulations at a public event, Maranhao state governor said as Brazil struggles to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.
The health authorities filed the case against Bolsonaro “to encourage unprotected gatherings in Maranhao. The law applies to everyone, ”tweeted the governor of the northeastern state, the leftist Flavio Dino, on late Friday.
Dino reminded the public that gatherings of more than 100 people are prohibited in his state and the use of face masks is mandatory.
The Bolsonaro office has 15 days to appeal. The amount of the fine is then determined. The office did not respond to requests from AFP for comments.
On Friday, Bolsonaro distributed rural property rights in Acailandia, some 500 kilometers from Sao Luis, capital of Maranhao state.
At the event, the maskless Bolsonaro beat up Governor Dino as a “chubby dictator”.
The right-wing extremist Brazilian president rejects Covid’s detention rules and has attacked governors who, as “dictators”, impose local health restrictions.
Brazil has the second highest number of coronavirus deaths in the world after the US.
The first case of the Indian variant of Covid-19 in Brazil was confirmed on Thursday in Maranhao – one of the poorest states in the country – among six crew members of a cargo ship registered in Hong Kong.
