Central Vista project essential: Delhi HC junks petition seeking stay, fines petitioner


The Delhi Supreme Court has rejected a petition asking to remain on the construction of the Central Vista project, stating that it is essential and a matter of vital public concern.

The Delhi Supreme Court has denied a petition seeking the Central Vista project to stay on, saying it is an essential project and of national importance.

The Delhi Supreme Court Bank, Chief Justice DN Patel and Judge Jyoti Singh, also fined the petitioners Rs 1 lakh and stated that the petition was not in good faith. The court said that with the construction workers residing on site, there is no question of continuing construction in Central Vista.

“It is an essential project of national importance. It is vital, ”said the Delhi HC while confirming the legality of the Central Vista project. The government must complete the work of Central Vista by November 2021.

The Delhi Supreme Court also noted, “With the workers on site and all Covid protocols being followed, there is no reason for this court to suspend the project while exercising Article 226 powers.”

The Supreme Court said it was a motivated petition while the petitioners were being fined Rs 1 lakh.

The The petitioners had argued in their plea that the Central Vista project was not a major activity and can be put on hold for the time being. During the May 17 hearing, the Center called the plea “a facade” or “disguise” to bring the project to a halt.

The petitioners, on the other hand, claimed that they were only interested in the safety of local workers and the citizens living in the region.

The petitioners’ lawyer compared the project to “Auschwitz”, a German concentration camp during the Second World War.

Strong arguments against maintaining the plea were put forward during the hearing.

Shapoorji Pallonji and Company Pvt Ltd, which won the tender for the project, had also spoken out against the plea, stating that Bonafide was missing and that the company was looking after its workforce.
