Centre recalls West Bengal chief secretary hours after PM-Mamata meet row


West Bengal chief secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay has been asked to join the Human Resources and Training Department in the North Block in New Delhi from May 31.

Hours after Bengali Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay met Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bandyopadhyay, a 1987 Cadre IAS official was given a central deputation with immediate effect.

Bandyopadhyay’s term of office was recently extended by the center for three months at the request of the state.

Bandyopadhyay was deputy to the Ministry of Public Complaints and Pensions. He was asked to report DOPT, North Block, New Delhi, at 10am on May 31st.

In a notice issued on May 24th by Nabanna, the State Secretariat, the West Bengal government requested a three-month extension of the current Secretary-General Alapan Bandyopadhyay’s service. Accordingly, Bandyopadhyay’s term of office was extended as Secretary General by the Government of India on May 24, four days before the new order that came in today.

Bandyopadyay, known to be close to CM Mamata Banerjee, is an Indian civil servant and the current chief secretary of the West Bengal government. He succeeded IAS Representative Rajiva Sinha in 2020 and began his tenure under Mamata Banerjee’s second term.

The proposal was sent to the Prime Minister’s Office of the Chief Secretary.
