Centre seeks report from Bengal Governor on law & order situation after state fails to reply

The Ministry of Interior (MHA) has asked the Governor of West Bengal, Jagdeep Dhankhar, to send a report on the legal and regulatory situation in the state regarding the post-election violence.

The report was even obtained as Union Minister V. Muraleedharan’s convoy was attacked in Midnapore of West Bengal on Thursday.

Union Interior Minister Ajay Bhalla had written a letter asking for a report from Bengal and sent a reminder on Wednesday. However, the Bengali government was unable to return. Without a response from the state government, the center has now requested a report from Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar.

Earlier in the day, the Interior Ministry took reports of post-election violence in Bengal seriously sent a team of four to the state, led by an additional secretary to assess the situation on the ground.

The team is on its way to West Bengal and will investigate the incidents of post-election violence, the situation on the ground and alleged attacks on BJP workers.

“The team of four, led by an additional secretary, traveled from Delhi to Calcutta to assess the situation in the state,” a government source told India Today.

The team is expected to produce a report on the facts behind the violence that took place following the West Bengal election results.

On Wednesday, the Interior Ministry sent a terse warning to the West Bengal government to provide a detailed report on the post-election violence in the state, stating that if not, the matter would be “taken seriously” and urged them to take the necessary steps to stop such incidents “without wasting time”.

“The Interior Ministry immediately asked for a detailed report. Unfortunately, the report has not yet been received and this shows that the state government has not taken any effective measures. If the report is not received, it will be taken seriously, ”a government source told India Today TV.

The Interior Ministry reminded the West Bengal chief secretary that on May 3 it requested an immediate report on post-election violence in the state.

According to the latest information, the violence has not stopped in West Bengal, which means the state government has not taken effective measures to control it, the letter said.

Therefore, the necessary steps should be taken to prevent these incidents without wasting time, he added. A detailed report should be sent to the Home Office (MHA) immediately, it said.
