Covid lockdown in Uttar Pradesh extended till May 31, industrial activity exempted


The curfew on Covid-19 in the state of Uttar Pradesh has been extended to May 31 to break the chain of transmission. The decision was made at a meeting of the State Cabinet on Saturday.

The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to extend the nationwide curfew to May 31st to break the chain of Covid-19 transmission. A decision in this regard was made at a meeting of the State Cabinet chaired by UP CM Yogi Adityanath in Kanpur on Saturday.

According to a government ordinance, the The nationwide curfew remains on May 31st until 7am. Vaccinations, commercial activities, essential services and movements related to medical emergencies are exempt from the restrictions.

The state recorded 6,046 new confirmed cases of infection and 226 more deaths from Covid in the past 24 hours. There are currently 94,482 active cases in the state while a total of 15,51,716 patients have recovered.

According to the state government’s Ministry of Health, Covid-19 has claimed 18,978 deaths in Uttar Pradesh since the pandemic began.

At a press conference in Kanpur on Saturday, UP CM Adityanath claimed the second wave of Covid-19 infections in the state would be contained by May 30th. He urged officials to ban large gatherings and appealed to the state’s population to abide by Covid-appropriate conduct.

Steps will be taken to improve the rate of vaccination in June, said the prime minister.

For the past seven days, Uttar Pradesh has absorbed a Average daily infections decreased by almost 50 percent compared to the previous week. Data compiled by the Union Department of Health shows that only five districts in UP have a positivity rate greater than 10 percent.

UP government officials say aggressive testing in villages has led to a drastic drop in new cases.

The state government has already made efforts to prepare for a third wave of Covid-19 infections.
