Cyclone Tauktae: 49 still missing, high-level committee to probe how ONGC vessel was stranded


After Barge P-305 sank 35 miles from Mumbai on May 17th as Cyclone Tauktae was on its way Across the west coast, the Oil and Gas Union Department has set up a three-person panel to investigate the events that led to the ship being stranded.

The panel is expected to present its report in one month.

With 49 crew members still missing is the Indian Navy Search and rescue (SAR) operations in the incident continued for the third day on Wednesday. The naval ships and planes try to rescue the missing crew members on the barge.

SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATIONS

So far, a total of 186 survivors have been rescued and the remains of 26 others have been recovered. The barque was serving ONGC’s offshore operation when she sank.

INS helicopters, INS Kolkata, INS Beas, INS Betwa, INS Teg, P81 maritime patrol aircraft, Chetak and Seaking helicopters are involved in the rescue operations.

INS Kochi entered port on Wednesday to disembark 125 survivors and the remains of four crew members. The ship was immediately sailed out the same evening to continue the search.

INS Kolkata is scheduled to enter the port of Mumbai on the night of May 19 to disembark the survivors rescued from the barge, including two from the tug Varapradha, as well as the remains of 18 crew members recovered during the operation .

After the completion of its operations off the coast of Gujarat, INS Talwar was also diverted to join the three other naval vessels searching for missing crew members of the P-305 launch off Mumbai.

INS Talwar was the “on-site coordinator” off the coast of Gujarat and supported Support Station 3 and the drill ship Sagar Bhushan, which are now being safely towed back to Mumbai by ONGC aid vessels.

Food and water for the 300 crew members on these ships were provided by naval helicopters from Mumbai earlier in the day.
