Cyclone Yaas: All agencies on high alert, fishing boats recalled, passenger trains cancelled


All government and industry stakeholders are on high alert and ready to work closely together to begin relief and rescue operations in the face of Cyclone Yaas approaching the east coast of India, a group of Union ministers said on Monday .

Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Dharmendra Pradhan and Mansukh Mandaviya held a meeting with various government officials and industry stakeholders to review cyclone readiness and ensure cooperation during relief and rescue operations.

In addition to representatives from industry, officials from the Indian Meteorological Authority (IMD), the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the Department of Shipping, the Ministry of Railways and the state governments also took part in the meeting.

During the meeting, the IMD informed the minister that Cyclone Yaas is currently lying as a depression over the east-central bay of Bengal and is very likely moving slowly from north to northwest and intensifying into a very severe cyclone storm and the northwest bay of Bengal reached near the coasts of Northern Odisha and West Bengal by the morning of May 26th.

DG Shipping announced that it and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways have set up control rooms and that notices will be sent four times a day.

Meanwhile it is The railways have canceled all passenger trains passing through the areas hardest hit by the cyclonefrom Tuesday. The freight trains are also regulated when the wind speed increases.

However, the railways will ensure that the movement of Oxygen Express from Rourkela continues on alternative routes.

The railways have already brought the emergency equipment and supplies to strategic locations and the restoration work will be carried out at the earliest, officials told ministers.

During the meeting, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said the central and state governments are working together to ensure minimal loss to people and property from the cyclone. Goyal hopes that Cyclone Yaas can be addressed as efficiently as Cyclone Tauktae has been managed through the combined efforts of all parties involved.

The minister said that the prime minister and interior minister have reviewed the preparations and that the union ministers are also working with the authorities concerned. He urged that relief supplies be properly channeled, minimal communications and power outages ensured, cell phones and flashlights fully charged, and DG devices fully filled with fuel. The rail minister called for constant monitoring of the situation, support for health workers and anyone in need.

Union Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan assured that the rest of the country’s supply of liquid medical oxygen from East India would not be affected. He said the Department of PNG had fully assessed various oil and gas facilities, ships, docks, etc. in the area and learned from recent experience to take every precaution to ensure minimal damage.

Officials from the Odisha and West governments, who were also present, provided information on the measures they are taking to reduce the effects of Cyclone Yaas and their willingness to conduct rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts in their respective areas. They said measures had been taken to ensure a smooth supply of essential goods, especially medical supplies. They have also given advice and instructions on how to do this.

The industry representative who attended the meeting assured that they would cooperate on rescue and relief efforts. They also said the actions taken by various agencies make them feel that they will be able to face the situation effectively.

Union Minister of State for Shipping and Ports Mansukh Mandaviya said the meeting with industry prior to cyclone Tauktae helped both authorities and industry. “Better awareness, availability of information and coordination helped minimize losses and everyone was better prepared for the situation,” Mandaviya said.

He said this helped take preventive measures as well as effective post-cyclone relief, rescue and rehabilitation measures.
