Cyclone Yaas: Bengal, Odisha CMs review preparedness as eastern coast braces for severe storm


Severe cyclone storm ‘Yaas’ is approaching the coast of West Bengal and Odisha and is expected to land near the port of Dhamra in Bhadrak district early May 26th.

Both state governments have already taken several steps to deal with the effects of the cyclone. They have already evacuated over 11 lakh from the coastal regions.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and state governor Jagdeep Dhankhar visited the control room set up at the Nabanna State Secretariat to review preparations on Tuesday.

While Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik held a review meeting with State Secretary SC Mahapatra and Special Aid Commissioner PK Jena via a virtual platform that connects the state control room and Cyclone dashboard.

During a press conference at the secretariat, CM Mamata Banerjee from Bengal said two people had already died from an electric shock in Pandua.

“So far there have been two incidents, one in Halisahar, which partially damaged 40 houses, and one in Chunchura, which affected some houses. Two people were electrocuted in Pandua,” she said.

The Prime Minister urged people not to move out of their homes as the landing could take place between morning and noon tomorrow.

However, the state government claimed that mini-towers had broken out in some parts of Bengal, leading to the loss of property.

Mamata Banerjee will be staying in Nabanna tonight to closely monitor the situation. “I’ll be on duty all night. There is nothing to worry about. I will inform you again tomorrow (Wednesday) ”, she said.

Meanwhile, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and the fire department have established control rooms around the clock.

“Tree cutters and other fire extinguishers were kept on hand for firefighters to do after the cyclone. Fire Department Minister Sujit Bose will be in the control room for the next two days to monitor the situation, ”said an official statement.

The KMC has also made arrangements to clear trees from the road that are likely to be uprooted after the cyclone and to monitor the drainage system.

TMC MLA and former member, Mayor of KMC Debashish Kumar, has also published helpline numbers for all those people who have been stranded or have family members stranded in the middle of this natural disaster.

ODISHA CM EVALUATES THE PREPARATION OF THE CYCLONE

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik held a meeting on Tuesday with Chief Secretary SC Mahapatra and Special Aid Commissioner (SRC) PK Jena to review preparations against the approaching cyclone. The review meeting took place via a virtual platform that linked the state control room and the cyclone dashboard.

The Odisha CM directed the administration to periodically monitor the situation and sought people-to-people cooperation in the evacuation, the CMO said in an official statement.

“Every life is precious and every possible step should be taken to protect it,” CM Patnaik quoted.

The Secretary General briefed the Prime Minister on the administration’s steps in relation to the evacuation.

PK Jena gave a lecture on the position of the cyclone.

He said the latest data suggest the cyclone will land between Bahanaga and Basudevpur. He also provided information about precautions for drinking water, special precautions in hospitals in Covid, oxygen buffers, communication network for power supply and other precautions, “the statement added.

The commissioner added that the evacuation was in full swing. Over 2.5 lakh have already been evacuated and the rest will be evacuated from vulnerable locations by tonight, he added.

PK Jena assured the Prime Minister that everyone was ready to face the cyclone with the rescue and recovery plan.
