Cyclone Yaas draws close, red-coded warning sounded in coastal Odisha, West Bengal | Top Developments


The states of West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand evacuated the citizens on a war basis prior to the landing of Cyclone Yaas, which intensified into a very severe cyclone storm on its way across the Bay of Bengal. On Tuesday, the Indian Meteorological Office (IMD) issued a red-coded warning alarm for the coasts of Odisha and Bengal.

According to the prognosis of the IMD Cyclone Yaas will likely land north of Dhamra and south of Balasore on Wednesday, May 26th, around noon. The cyclone storm was located 160 km southeast of Paradip in Odisha and 240 km south-southeast of Digha in West Bengal across the northwest and adjacent to the west-central Bay of Bengal Tuesday evening and is likely to reach a top speed of 155 km / h to 165 km / h, which up to 185 km / h during landing.

Indian Navy ships and planes stand by for rescue operations as the cyclone storm gains strength and moves northwest. It is likely that it will cross the coast between Northern Odisha and West Bengal around noon on May 26th. ODISHA

In Odisha, the state government has set itself the goal of evacuating 3.54,559 people seven districts likely to be affected by the cyclone. By evening, 2,74,426 people had been brought to safety from lower-lying areas of coastal areas.

SRC PK Jena told India Today: “While there are around 860 permanent shelters, 6031 additional cyclone shelters have been identified. A total of around 7.5 lakh can be accommodated in the shelters.”

In the meantime, a red warning has been issued for the Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Dhenkanal districts, where heavy to very heavy rains can be expected in some places with isolated extremely heavy showers in some other areas tomorrow. Likewise, it is very likely that heavy rainfall will occur in isolated locations in Anugul, Deogarh, Khurdha, Puri and Sundergarh districts on May 26, according to an IMD bulletin.

Prime Minister Naveen Patnaik has ordered Interior Minister Dibyashankar Mishra to camp in Balasore to monitor the situation. Together with Kendrapara, Jagatisnghpur and Bhadrak, Balasore are the four high-risk zones in the coastal belt of Odisha, in which the approaching cyclone threatens to cause great damage.

WEST BENGAL

Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar visited the control room at the State Secretariat in Nabanna to review preparations for Cyclone Yaas. The CM later told ANI that they had spoken to all of the district judges and would be staying in Nabanna overnight to closely monitor the situation.

The NDRF has already evacuated over eight lakh from vulnerable and low-lying areas in 14 districts of West Bengal, a statement said.

However, The disaster happened unexpectedly when a “tornado” hit the counties of Hooghly and North 24 Parganas of the state. At least two people were electrocuted and around 80 houses were partially damaged in the freak event.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and the fire department have established control rooms around the clock. According to an official statement, tree cutters and other fire-fighting equipment for firefighters were being prepared to conduct post-cyclone relief efforts. Fire Department Minister Sujit Bose will be in the control room for the next two days to monitor the situation.

JHARKHAND

Preparations for rescue and relief operations were completed on Tuesday, where the effects of the cyclone are likely to be felt in East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, Seraikela Kharsawan, Khunti, Simdega and Gumla districts. Wind speeds could reach 90 km / h or more in these areas, with heavy rains in some places.

The effects of Cyclone Yaas will be felt most on May 26th and 27th, with a slowdown forecast on May 28th.

A control room was set up at Ranchi to keep an eye on the law and order situation during the storm. Several districts have also assigned helpline numbers.

Jharkhand’s Prime Minister, Hemant Soren, ran the Civil Protection Department to ensure that electricity and oxygen supplies were maintained in hospitals. Officials have been asked to keep an eye on low-lying areas of the Swarnarekha River that have been affected by flooding. Due to the possibility of heavy rains washing away Kaccha houses, a shelter has been opened to accommodate people.

UTTAR PRADESH

District authorities issued a notice between May 26-27, predicting the IMD that 27 districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency, Varanasi, could expect heavy rainfall, as well as thunder and lightning strikes. Several helpline numbers have also been set up for information about the cyclone.

The recommendation warned people not to fall for false news or unfounded rumors and listen to the radio, watch TV and read the newspapers to stay up to date on the weather. Turn off the electricity and gas supplies if you are at home during the storm. The fishermen have been warned not to venture into the river in bad weather and told to keep their boats in a high and safe place.

BIHAR

Due to the possibility of thunderstorms and rain in the state May 27-30, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar held a high-level meeting with the Disaster Management Department and district judges to review Cyclone Yaas readiness.
