The IMD announced on Thursday that an area of low pressure formed over the Arabian Sea could intensify into a cyclone storm that could lead to heavy rains in Goa, South Konkan and parts of Gujarat.

A low pressure area formed over the Arabian Sea is expected to intensify into a cyclone storm by May 16, the India Meteorological Department said. This could lead to heavy rainfall in some places in Goa and the southern Konkan region. The districts of Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri in Maharashtra make up the southern Konkan region.
In an expert opinion, the IMD added that the low-pressure area would concentrate into a depression over the Arabian Sea until Saturday morning Intensification in a cyclone storm during the following 24 hours.
“A low pressure area has formed over the southeastern Arabian Sea and the adjacent Lakshadweep area today. It is very likely that it will be well marked over the Lakshadweep area by Friday morning,” the IMD said Thursday.
This cyclone storm is likely to worsen further, moving north to northwest to Gujarat and the adjacent Pakistani coasts. It is estimated that it will hit the Gujarat coast by the evening of May 18.

The IMD continues that many areas in Goa and South Konkan will receive light to moderate rainfall on Saturday. As the cyclone intensifies, some areas will experience heavy to very heavy rains between Sunday and Monday.

Precipitation between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm over a period of 24 hours is considered heavy. At the same time, 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in the same period are referred to as very heavy precipitation.
Gusty winds with a speed of 50 km / h to 80 km / h could accompany the rain in these regions over the course of the next 5 to 6 days.
The Gujarat Coast Guard has been put on alert at the recommendation of IMD. Prime Minister Vijay Rupani held a meeting with officials on Wednesday to take stock of preparedness.
