The positivity rate of the Covid-19 tests conducted in Delhi fell to its lowest level in a month on Thursday. The state capital reported 10,489 Covid-19 cases and 308 more deaths due to the viral disease in the past 24 hours with a positivity rate of 14.24 percent.
This positivity rate is the lowest since April 13, 2021, when Delhi recorded it at 13.14 percent.
The positivity rate is calculated by taking into account the number of positive Covid-19 test results versus the total number of tests performed.
In Delhi, the rate has been falling steadily over the past few days. The positivity rate in Delhi was 23.34 percent on Saturday, 21.67 percent on Sunday, 19.10 percent on Monday, 17.8 percent on Tuesday and 17 percent on Wednesday.
The highest positivity rate in Delhi was recorded on April 22nd at 36.2 percent.
The daily record of Covid cases shows that the fourth wave of the pandemic that is currently affecting the state capital has peaked. Just like the positivity rate, Delhi has seen a steady decline in new cases every day.
On Wednesday, Delhi reported 13,287 Covid-19 cases, 12,481 Tuesday, 12,651 Monday, 13,336 Sunday, 17,364 Saturday, 19,832 last Friday, 19,133 last Thursday, 20,960 last Wednesday, and 19,953 last Tuesday.
The total number of coronavirus deaths in the state capital has reached 20,618. The number of active cases in Delhi currently stands at 77,717, of which 48,340 patients are in domestic isolation, according to the Delhi government’s health report.
The rate of active cases versus the total in Delhi has also dropped to its lowest level since April 12. On Thursday the rate was 5.66 percent. On April 12, it was 5.17 percent.
In the past 24 hours, 15,189 patients recovered from Covid-19, bringing the recovery rate in Delhi to 92.83 percent.
A total of 73,675 Covid tests were performed in Delhi in the past 24 hours, of which 58,709 were RT-PCR tests and 14,966 were rapid antigen tests.
Delhi’s need for oxygen is falling
With capital declining steadily in new Covid cases, the need for oxygen supply also declined. Delhi Deputy Prime Minister Manish Sisodia said Thursday that the state capital’s oxygen demand had dropped from 700 tons per day to 582 tons.
“The number of new cases has fallen from around 28,000 to around 10,400. The positivity rate has fallen from 35 to 14 percent. There are now more beds available in the COVID hospitals, and the need for oxygen has also decreased,” Sisodia said at a virtual press conference .
Delhi was using 700 tons of oxygen per day when coronavirus cases peaked. Given the decreased bed occupancy and the drop in the number of daily cases, the government has recalculated demand, which is now 582 tons, he added.
The center had recently increased Delhi’s oxygen quota to 590 tons per day.
“The Delhi government has written to the center asking it to transfer the excess oxygen to other states. We are a responsible government,” said Sisodia, who is also the node minister for Covid-19 management in the capital.
He thanked the Center and the Delhi Supreme Court for coming to the aid of the Delhiites when they were in distress due to an increase in the number of coronavirus cases.
The number of oxygen-related SOS calls from hospitals has also fallen sharply, the Aam Aadmi party leader said, adding that only one or two such cases have been reported in the past 24 to 48 hours.
