EC not for moving SC for curbs on media reporting over judges’ oral observations

The electoral commission said Wednesday it was unanimous that no prayer should be held in the Supreme Court for curtailing media coverage of oral statements made by judges.

The Commission responded to a news report that the electoral panel in Madras High Court prevented the media from reporting oral comments by judges and the subsequent Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court against the High Court’s remark on “murder charges” were not unanimously approved by the electoral body.

A senior official said the EC had the highest court against them oral observations from the Madras High Court.

He said that based on the oral remarks that were not part of the written order, people could take action against EC officials.

The official pointed out that following the Supreme Court’s remarks, a case had been brought against senior EC officials in West Bengal.

When asked if the Commission was unanimous in asking the Madras High Court to prevent the media from reporting oral remarks by the bank, another official referred to part of the press release that said, “The Commission has always give appropriate thought before making decisions. “

This indicates a disagreement on the matter.

“The Indian Election Commission has taken note of the latest presentation of its position on the media. The Commission has also come across certain press reports in this regard. The Commission has always given appropriate thought before making decisions,” the polling panel said said in a statement.

The electoral commission agreed that there should be no prayer in the Supreme Court for curtailing media coverage.

“In relation to media involvement, the Commission would like to make it clear that it is genuinely committed to their trust in the free media. The Commission as a whole and each of its members recognize the positive role of the media in conducting all elections, past and present, and in strengthening electoral democracy in the country, ”the statement said.

“The Commission particularly recognizes the role of the media in improving the effectiveness of election management and in enhancing transparency from the beginning of the electoral process to the end, including transparent reporting throughout all processes, campaigning and from polling station to polling station level Counting, “she said.

The EC’s approach to media collaboration is that of a natural ally and remains unchanged, the poll’s watchdog said.
