Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed injured in bomb blast


Former President of the Maldives and Speaker of the Maldives Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, was injured in an explosion Thursday evening. The explosion took place near his car.

“After an explosion on Neeloafaru Magu in Malé, the President of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, sustained injuries and is currently being treated at the ADK hospital,” tweeted the Maldives police.

In another tweet, police said they are currently active on the ground and urged the public not to go to the area for the time being. “We will keep the public up to date.”

Pictures from the state television channel PSM showed security services securing the location of the incident in the capital, Male. A foreign tourist was also injured, the broadcaster reported.

“Strongly condemn the attack on the Speaker of Parliament, President Mohamed Nasheed, tonight,” the country’s Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid, a member of the Maldivian Democratic Party of Nasheed, said in a tweet. “Cowardly attacks like this have no place in our society. My thoughts and prayers go with President Nasheed and others injured in this attack and their families.”

Former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Waheed, condemned the attack and called for an end to the “spread of hatred in Maldivian politics”.

“I wholeheartedly condemn the attack on my former comrade-in-arms and predecessor Mohamed Nasheed. The spread of hatred in Maldivian politics must stop and we must find ways to unite and work together instead of sharing. My prayers are with him. the SPG and their families, “tweeted Mohamed Waheed.

In response to developments in the Maldives, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said he was “deeply concerned” and wished Mohamed Nasheed a speedy recovery.

“Deeply concerned about the attack on Speaker Mohamed Nasheed. Wish him a speedy recovery. You know he will never be intimidated,” Jaishankar tweeted.
