The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) issued a notice on Friday allowing hospitals and nursing homes to accept cash payments in excess of Rs 2 lakh for treating Covid-19 patients.
The Income Tax Department has granted “relief in obtaining the PAN or Aadhaar of the patient and the payee and the relationship between the patient and the payee” through such hospitals or Covid care centers for the period April 1 to May 31.
According to the notice, “hospitals, pharmacies, nursing homes, COVID care centers, or similar other medical facilities treating patients with Covid-19 are” specified for the purposes of Section 269ST of the Income Tax Act.

This section prevents any person from receiving from any person an amount of Rs 2 lakh or more in cash in any one day for a single transaction or for transactions relating to an event or occasion by any person.
It was introduced by the Union government in 2017 to curb black money.
Officials said the move is aimed at eliminating the hardship faced by relatives and caregivers of Covid-19 patients who visit hospitals for treatment.
The country is grappling with the onslaught of a massive Covid-19 wave that reported 4,187 deaths and 4,01,078 new infections within 24 hours, according to data from the Union’s Ministry of Health, updated on Saturday morning.
