Himanta or Sonowal? BJP MLAs’ meet today to announce Assam’s next CM


The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) convened its Legislative Party meeting on Sunday, after which it will announce the name of the next Prime Minister of Assam. The meeting begins around 11 a.m. and takes place in the Assam Assembly building in Dispur.

The decision was made after a high-level meeting of the central leadership of the BJP in New Delhi.

Sources say the BJP legislative party is likely to elect Himanta Biswa Sarma as its leader, paving the way for him to become the next prime minister. A formal announcement to this effect will also be made.

Around 4 p.m., a BJP delegation is expected to ask the governor of Assam, Jagdish Mukhi, to lay claim to the formation of a government in the state.

Assam State BJP President Ranjeet Kumar Dass said that as directed by the central leadership, all elected MLAs were asked to attend the Legislative Party’s meeting.

“The name of the Prime Minister will be announced at the meeting. Four high-ranking party leaders – BL Santosh, the Union’s Agriculture Minister, Narendra Singh Tomar, the BJP’s National Secretary General, Arun Singh, the Baijayant Jay Panda in charge of the government – will be present have a single agenda to choose the chairman of the BJP Legislative Party, “said Ranjeet Kumar Dass.

An important meeting was held on Saturday at the residence of BJP National President JP Nadda in New Delhi to discuss the name of the next Prime Minister of Assam. Talks were also held with the incumbent Prime Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and the Minister of State Himanta Biswa Sarma in the presence of the Union’s Interior Minister, Amit Shah.

The The results of the polls by the Assam Assembly were announced on May 2nd and the BJP-led alliance won 75 out of 126 seats. The BJP alone won 60 seats.

Sonowal and Sarma were called to New Delhi on Friday from the central leadership of the BJP, apparently to discuss the leadership problem in Assam.

Sonowal, who belongs to Assam’s indigenous Sonowal Kachari tribes, and Sarma, an Assamese Brahmin who convenes the North East Democratic Alliance, are candidates for the top post of the Assam government.

The BJP had not announced a candidate for prime minister before the elections in Assam.

In the polls of the 2016 assembly, the BJP had projected and won Sonowal as its top ministerial candidate, thus forming the first government of the Saffron Party in the northeast.

This time the party has claimed that it will decide who will be the next prime minister of Assam after the elections.
