Jaish operative arrested in Delhi with saffron clothes, was planning to kill Dasna priest Yati Narsinghanand

A Pulwama resident was arrested in Delhi for allegedly planning to kill controversial priest Swami Yati Narsinghanand on behalf of the Pakistan-based terrorist outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed. The defendant, identified as Jan Mohammed Dar, was arrested on Sunday at a hotel in Paharganj.

According to the Delhi police, the items recovered from his property indicate that Jan Mohammed Dar intended to disguise himself like a Hindu priest in order to murder Dasna Devi temple priests Swami Yati Narsinghan and Saraswatiwho recently made controversial comments against the Prophet Muhammad.

The Delhi police got a saffron kurta, white pajamas, kalava (holy thread), pearl necklace, sandalwood paste and a box of kumkum (vermilion), as well as a 30-hole pistol and two 15-round magazines.

During the preliminary interrogation, Jan Mohammed Dar announced that he had been instructed to kill the priest using the terror outfit, the police said.

HOW THE MURDER WAS PLANNED

Jan Mohammed Dar, a carpenter by trade, was reportedly in contact with Jaish-e-Mohammed agent Abid in December 2020. Abid, who operated from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, motivated Dar to work for the terror outfit and maintained contact with him on WhatsApp through him, police said. On April 2, 2021, Abid met Dar in Anantnag and reportedly hired him to kill Swami Yati Narsinghan and Saraswati. He also showed him the priest’s videos, which had gone viral because of their controversial content, police said.

According to Dar’s statement to the police, Abid then gave him a pistol and taught him how to use it. A substantial sum of money was promised to kill the priest, police said. He was also given Rs 6,500 in cash and Rs 35,000 in his bank account before going to Delhi, it said.

On April 23, Dar traveled to Delhi, where he met Abid’s contact Umar.

Police said Umar took Dar to one of his hiding places for three days and later transferred him to a hotel in Pahar Ganj. According to police, Umar brought the puja items and the bhagwa dress as cover to gain entry to the temple. In addition, Dar and Umar received a shipment of weapons from another person on the flyover near his hotel, police said.

Dar was previously arrested for falling rocks during protests in Jammu and Kashmir following the death of Burhan Wani in 2016.

WHO IS YATI NARSINGHANAND AND WHAT DID HE SAY?

Swami Yati Narsinghanand is the high priest of Dasna Devi Temple in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. It first made headlines in March when a 14-year-old Muslim boy was attacked by the priest’s student for attempting to enter the temple grounds.

The temple has a ban on the gate that reads: “Ye mandir Hinduon ka pavitra sthal hai, yahan Musalmanon ka pravesh varjit hai (This temple is a sacred place for Hindus, entry of Muslims is forbidden).”

A month later Yati Narsinghanand allegedly made inflammatory remarks against the Prophet Mohammed and Islam when speaking at a press conference organized by Akhil Bharatiya Sant Parishad (Ghaziabad) in the Press Club of India in New Delhi.

In the video of the event that went viral, Narsinghanand can be heard saying, “When Muslims learn of Muhammad’s reality, they will be ashamed to call themselves Muslims.”

The statements caused an uproar among Muslim communities in India. A man in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut even offered to pay Rs 51 lakh to behead the priest. The man was later arrested by UP police.
