At a time when the country is grappling with an oxygen equipment crisis, 60-year-old Mohammad Ismail Mir made an affordable prototype oxygen concentrator at home. His penchant for scientific innovation has earned him the “Newton” title among the locals.
“It took me about 20 days to make this prototype. It works like any other oxygen concentrator. It automatically delivers oxygen and clears blockages as they form in it, ”said Mohammad Ismail.
When asked how many people the prototype can assist, he said, “It depends on the type of compressor and filter used. For one person we will use small ones and for more patients the parts will have to be modified accordingly, ”he said.
At a time when oxygen concentrators are desperately needed, many have fine-tuned the saying that such locally made prototypes can alleviate the shortage.
Mohammad Ismail said the prototype oxygen concentrator he is making will cost between 10,000 and 15,000 rupees and he hopes someone will push the project forward.
Mohammad Ismail studied up to grade 12 and had to drop out at home for financial reasons, but he always had a preference for scientific innovations.
During the first wave of Covid-19, he had designed a prototype automatic ventilator. His work was widely appreciated. In 2008 he designed a lantern with a motion sensor with a fire alarm system.
