A small fire was reported on board the Indian aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya on Saturday morning. The fire has been extinguished and all personnel on board are safe, a Navy spokesman said in a statement.
“On-duty staff observed smoke emanating from the part of the ship that had accommodations for seafarers. On-duty staff on the ship acted immediately to combat the fire. All staff on board were taken into account and no major damage was reported. An investigation into the incident is being ordered, “the statement said.
The aircraft carrier is located in the Karwaraka port of Karnataka.
INS Vikramaditya, a floating airfield, has a total length of 284 meters and a maximum width of 60 meters and extends over three football fields together.
The ship is around 20 stories high from the keel to the highest point, has a total of 22 decks and transports around 1,600 employees.
The warship is a modified Kiev-class aircraft carrier that was purchased by India from Russia in 2013 and renamed in honor of the legendary Emperor Vikramaditya.
Originally built as Baku and commissioned in 1987, the airline served with the Soviet Union (until the dissolution of the Soviet Union) and the Russian Navy before being decommissioned in 1996. The operation was too expensive.
