Nandurbar model: How a Maharashtra district is beating Covid-19 with its ‘oxygen nurses’

Following the success of Nandurbar’s “Oxygen Nurse” model, the state government decided last week to implement it across Maharashtra.

The term “oxygen nurse” was coined for in Nandurbar, a tribal district in Maharashtra its optimal use of oxygen cylinders. Following its success, the plan was implemented across Maharashtra last week. The state’s Department of Health said appointing oxygen nurses was an effective way to manage bottle use.

Nandurbar’s district collector Dr. Rajendra Bharud, the brain behind this idea, said the administration decided to appoint a nurse for every 50 beds. The nurse had only one job – to check the oxygen saturation of each patient.

“If a patient were to take off their oxygen mask, the nurse would insist that they wear it. As the patient’s condition improves and the oxygen level increases, the nurse will decrease the flow of oxygen from the bottle. When the patient’s oxygen level decreases.” This would ensure continuous monitoring of oxygen, “Bharud said, adding that this mechanism helps make optimal use of the scarce supply.

Oxygen readiness: farsightedness of the district

After Dr. Bharud himself had studied medicine, he had prepared at an early stage to ensure that there would be no oxygen starvation in his district in an emergency.

He investigated the situation in other countries and decided to install oxygen systems in his district. The first such system was installed in September last year, followed by two more at the beginning of this year.

This made the district oxygen-independent even during the pandemic. Today it shares the extra oxygen that is produced with the neighboring Dhule district.

Nandurbar’s Covid-19 dashboard

Recently, the Bombay High Court was briefed on the Nandurbar Covid-19 dashboard when they heard petitions related to Covid-19 management.

The The live dashboard has sections for ambulance and bed availabilityand details on Covid-19 cases, all just a click away. It also has the latest information on hospitals (both government and private) where beds are available, including intensive care beds.

The contact details of the hospitals and ambulances in each taluka are also listed on this dashboard.

“This entire website provides information on the availability of beds in private and government hospitals across the district. There are currently around 200 to 250 beds available. Many patients come from neighboring districts such as Jalgaon and Dhule for treatment from neighboring states such as Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.” said Dr. Bharud.

Get doctors from elsewhere

The district collector said while preparing for the pandemic he was aware of the problems plaguing Nandurbar, a 70 percent tribal district.

“We only had two doctors for a population of 20 lakh. So we had to ask all private hospitals and clinics to open up and start treating people. Since we only had two doctors, they were stressed because they were patients We approached our juniors and colleagues and asked doctors from Mumbai and Pune to come here and help us, “he said.

Aside from these measures, the strict lockdown in the district also helped keep the number of cases down. As of May 7, Nandurbar has 5,757 active Covid-19 cases.
