A dedicated CBI court in Kolkata on Monday granted bail to all four of the defendants arrested earlier in the day in connection with the Narada Sting case.

The CBI had arrested the ruling leaders and ministers of the Trinamool Congress, Firhad Hakim and Subrata Mukherjee, TMC MLA Madan Mitra and former party leader and minister Sovon Chatterjee on Monday morning.

According to the CBI, the four leaders were arrested for allegedly “seeking and accepting illegal gratification to show favor to a private individual posing as a representative of a fictitious company.” The alleged act was captured on camera. The tapes were released ahead of the 2016 Bengali Assembly polls.

CBI charged with illegal arrests

The arrest of four leaders sparked massive protests in front of the investigating authority’s office. When TMC supporters shouted slogans and threw stones at the central armed forces stationed outside, CM Mamata Banerjee from West Bengal stormed into the CBI office and demanded that their leaders be arrested.

In response to the arrests, TMC spokesman Kunal Ghosh alleged that the CBI action was a vengeful act and a consequence of the BJP’s loss in West Bengal’s general election. “The BJP is still unable to accept defeat in the polls after making a sweeping attempt to win … This is a reprehensible act.

“When the state is fighting the Covid situation, they are trying to cause disruption that way,” he said.

Ruling Party MP Sougata Roy said this was a “vengeful and vengeful” decision by the central government. “The CBI campaign is politically motivated,” said TMC MLA Tapas Roy.

West Bengal Assembly spokesman Biman Banerjee described the arrests as illegal and alleged that the CBI move was unlawful based on the governor’s sanction. “I have not received a letter from the CBI or asked anyone for permission under the protocol,” he said.

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar recently imposed sanctions on all four leaders, following which the investigating authorities finalized their charges and arrested them.

The CBI has announced that it has proceeded with arrests following the approval of the competent authority.

CBI will likely move HC to release deposits

The sources at the CBI have told India Today TV that the central investigative body may be able to turn to the Calcutta Supreme Court to request the waiver of the bail given to the four accused leaders by the CBI Special Court.

The CBI was hired by the Calcutta Supreme Court in March 2017 to investigate the Narada sting fraud.

Sore Loser: Firhad Hakim slams BJP

Minutes after bailing out the Narada Sting case, TMC leader and Bengali minister Firhad Hakim described the day’s events as the result of BJP’s vendetta policies.

The TMC leader claimed that the BJP subscribed to the vendetta policy because it could not accept its loss in the recent parliamentary elections.

“Today was not only a day to harass me and my colleagues and get vengeance, but it was BJP who unleashed his revenge on the Bengali people. Their painful loss and anger at the Bengali people for them TMC had chosen with landslide margins, “Firhad Hakim said.

Hakim claimed the BJP decided to stop working on Covid in order to take control of Bengal. “For them, Bengal power and possessions are more important than the deaths of lakhs in our country,” he said.

“The 2014 alleged stabbing operation involving some lakhs has not been proven and it will be picked up before the elections to harass us. Now it is being chosen out of revenge against people who bring TMC to power,” Hakim said in a social media post.

In an indirect neck at Suvendhu Adhikari and Mukul Roy, the The TMC leader claimed that the CBI was not targeting those leaders who had left the party and joined the BJP.

“My colleagues who bow to their pressure tactics and join BJP are spared arrest and harassment by CBI today. BJP has bowed so low that the country is losing its compatriots while focusing only on political vengeance,” said he.
