Pooja Rani wins her 2nd Asian Boxing Championships gold after beating Mavluda Movlonova in 75kg final


Pooja Rani unanimously beat her opponent from Uzbekistan 5-0 to secure the first gold medal for India in this edition of the Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Dubai.

Indian pugilist Pooja Rani repeated her performance as a gold medalist at the Asian Elite Boxing Championships on Sunday when she defeated Mavluda Movlonova in the women’s 75kg final in Dubai.

Pooja, who qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, made easy work for her opponent from Uzbekistan and unanimously won the first gold medal for India in this edition of the Asian Cup with 5-0. She received a walkover in the semifinals.

Pooja had won her first Asian boxing gold at the 81 kg event in 2019, but was unable to repeat this achievement last year as the 2020 competition did not take place due to the coronavirus pandemic. She had also bagged the bronze in 2015 and silver in 2012 at the Asian Boxing Middleweight Championships.

Pooja’s result came just hours after boxing legend MC Mary Kom lost her 51kg final to settle for the silver medal. Lalbuatsaihi also opted for a silver medal at the Asian Championships after losing a hard-fought 64kg women’s final to Kazakhstan’s Milana Safronova by a split decision (2-3).

The Indian contingent has already secured its best show to date with an unprecedented 15 medals and surpassed the highest of 13 medals (2 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze medals) to date.

Eight Indian pugilists, Simranjit Kaur (60 kg), Vikas Krishan (69 kg), Lovlina Borgohain (69 kg), Jaismine (57 kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (64 kg), Monika (48 kg), Saweety (81 kg) and Varinder Singh (60kg) bronze medals with her semifinals at the event.

This year’s Asian Boxing Championships had to be relocated from Delhi to the Middle East due to the Covid 19 crisis in India.
