Prayagraj: Burial of bodies in sand old custom but never saw so many, say locals

From Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, several cases of corpses in the sand on the banks of the Ganga River have come to the fore. Hundreds of bodies have been found in the past month and a half and disposed of under similar circumstances.

Despite orders from the state government in this regard, the Burial of bodies in the sand along the banks of the Ganga River continues to this day. Most of these bodies were wrapped in clothing and demarcated with bamboo sticks. There were also strips and bottles of medicine near the buried bodies.

The local government suggests the number of these bodies gives no indication of the increase in deaths in Covid, claiming that most bodies were buried before the second wave of infections hit the state.

“Never seen so many corpses”

Jairam, a 50-year-old priest, told India Today that 8-10 bodies were buried in the sand every day last week. All of this has now stopped due to strict management action due to media attention, he added.

Corpses buried in the sand on the banks of the Ganga River is an ancient custom, but the rise in the number of burials is certainly a sign of the Covid-19 epidemic, says Jairam.

Another local priest, Shankar Prasad Mishra, 55, says he has never seen so many bodies taken to the banks of the Ganga River for burial. The burials are fewer now because the government has cracked down on them, Mishra says.

Administration is considering how corpses should be disposed of: IG

Inspector General (IG), Prayagraj, KP Singh, told India Today today that Covid-19 victims will be cremated in Phaphamau Ghat. None of the coronavirus victims’ bodies were buried in the sand, he says.

Police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were deployed to patrol the banks of the Ganga River, according to IG Singh. He adds that this was done to ensure that no bodies were immersed in either the Ganga or Yamuna rivers.

Teams are patrolling the Ghats Chatnag, Phaphamau and Shringverpur around the clock, according to the senior police officer.

IG KP Singh also said the government is considering an alternative way to dispose of the bodies buried in the sand.
