States with heavy Covid-19 caseloads showing decline, says health ministry

There has been an unprecedented surge in Covid-19 cases in India in the past three weeks. Some states reported over 50,000 daily coronavirus infections.

The states that have reported the most Covid-19 cases to date are showing a sliding curve and in some cases the coronavirus wave is showing signs of a plateau, the Union Ministry of Health said in a news conference on Tuesday.

REDUCE THE TREND

The Department of Health said 82.75 percent (1,90,27,304) of the total Covid-19 cases the country had cured. This is next to the 37.15,221 or 16.16 percent active cases.

There has been a drop in cases in India in the past few days. The Ministry of Health said the country saw 4,14,188 cases on May 7, while 4,03,738 cases were reported on May 9.

“Over the past two days we’ve seen another downward trend, with 3,66,161 new cases reported on May 10 and 3,29,942 new cases on May 11,” said a health department official.

However, ministerial officials said this was an early trend and states should analyze local trends individually and continue to focus on Covid-19 management and strategies to contain Covid-19.

Currently, 13 states have more than 1 lakh active cases, six states have more than 50,000 to 1 lakh active cases, while 17 states have fewer than 50,000 active cases.

POSITIVITY RATE

The ministerial officials said there are currently 26 states with a positivity rate over 15 percent. Six other states have a positivity rate between 5 and 15 percent, and only four states have a positivity rate less than 5 percent.

Health Department officials said there were nine states where the positivity rate was greater than 25 percent, while there were 10 states where the positivity rate was between 20 and 25 percent. These states with high positivity rates are advised by the central government on what steps should be taken to contain the spread.
