The chief minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, has given AG Perarivalan, which has served a life sentence after her conviction in the murder of Rajiv Gandhi, a 30-day regular vacation. Stalin granted the leave after the convict’s mother, Arputhammal, made an application.

Arputhammal had previously written to the Prime Minister of Tamil Nadu and requested medical leave for Perarivalan amid ongoing second wave of Covid-19. She requested leave for two reasons.

Firstly, Perarivalan is exposed to Covid risk as he has been classified in the “High Risk Category” by the prison doctor due to his state of health, and secondly, Perarivalan still has an untreated medical problem for which he needs treatment.

During his previous vacation due to the Covid pandemic, all health wards were converted to Covid wards and he was unable to receive treatment.

Another point that Arputhammal mentioned in her motion was the Supreme Court’s May 7 ruling asking prisons to reduce inmates and also to grant leave to those who received it last year.

After the vacation request was approved, Arputhammal said, “I thank Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin for approving the vacation in Perarivalan, understanding a mother’s feelings and Perarivalan’s health.”

Perarivalan is serving a life sentence in connection with the assassination attempt on Rajiv Gandhi. A recommendation from the government of Tamil Nadu for his Article 161 release is pending from the state governor. The convicted man for the murder of Rajiv Gandhi has now been in prison for 30 years.
